What a relief today to wake up and know they we were staying a second night in Memphis. We woke up early today to get to Graceland by 9am for our tour. It was already 89 degrees at 9am. Graceland was awesome, we got learned and saw a lot about Elvis. More than I thought I would ever know about him. Elvis loved his cars and toys. He had a snowmobiles, golf carts, etc... He also bought some really nice cars and used to give some away to friends and family. He had two planes. Most of the time the large plane was used for his touring, but sometimes the large plane was used on a whim. Once, he realized his daughter had never seen snow so they flew to Colorado, played for an hour and then flew back to Memphis. Also learned that Elvis had a twin brother.
We spent about 2 hours at Graceland and then made our way down to Beale Street to catch a 3hr tour of Memphis on the Backstreet Bus Tour. We had Gary Hardy, a lifelong Memphis Musician and former owner of Sun Records, tell us history and also sing many of the famous songs from Sun Records Artist to us. This was probably the highlight of our trip for myself. Mia took the opportunity to catch a nap and Amy seemed to enjoy herself. I was able to buy a 32oz. Fat Tire Beer for the ride. That was a plus...
We finished the tour around 3pm. It started pouring at around 2:45pm. Some of the hardest rain I have ever seen. We had to get out at 3pm in it. However, that gave us a great opportunity to grab a late lunch. We went to the Blue's City Cafe on Beale and had the most amazing fried catfish and ribs. It's funny because just being around this area, the smell of BBQ is intoxicating, but in a good way..
We spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool at our hotel. It is an outdoor pool on the 9th floor that gives you a great view over the river and two beautiful bridges. Mia was very happy to be doing something she wanted to do. It's funny, it seems each day for her, it's all about getting to the hotel to get in the pool. Her interest varies on other activities, but down the road she will really remember some of these things. That's the hope anyway.
We finished off the night having dinner at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken. It was so delicious!! Pretty spicy as well. We had beans and slaw as sides and each had about 2-3 cups of sweet tea, one of my favorites!!
Tomorrow it's off to Vicksburg, MS. We are very concerned about Tropical Storm Lee. We are hoping that we don't hit too much rain or wind tomorrow during our drive.
